The opening of the tennis season saw Connetquot a heavy underdog go down to the power that is Walt Whitman. The Thunderbird players certainly knew what was instore for them as they took the courts on Tuesday afternoon. The early excitement and planned attack was quickly overpowered by pinpoint accuracy on forehand passes and blistering serves. With the exception of second doubles and fourth singles the first sets breezed by and one would think that the Whitman bus would soon be on the road.

However what occurred next would never make the newspaper, would never register unless you were there to witness it. Each Connetquot player decided to dig deeper and press forward. In a match where the T-Birds were fighting for respectability nearly won much more than that. Young men, winners in everything they do seemed to get used to the speed of their opponents. They seemed to be able to time the viscous serves and angled ground strokes. The champions that they are began to shine through, and it was evident by their opponents faces and shakiness that these boys would not lay down. And while Walt Whitman walked away winning each of the seven matches, the Thunderbirds walked away with something much more important this early in the season, hope. Hope that we will climb this ladder of success and become a team that must be respected as the season moves forward. Today is just an example of why I love being a  T-BIRD.
